The name comes from the Latin for “to give”, so the dative is literally the giving case, and its primary meaning is the indirect object - the recipient of an action. Answers кому? / чему? (to whom? / for what?).

Direct vs indirect object

Giving is the clearest test. In “I gave the dog water”, water is the direct object (the thing you physically act on and hand over, accusative) and the dog is the indirect object (the recipient, not directly acted on, dative). Flip it - “I gave the dog to my wife” - and now the dog is the direct object and the wife is the indirect object. English uses to / for; Russian just puts the recipient in the dative, no preposition.

Verbs that commonly take a dative recipient

  • давать / дать - to give
  • дарить / подарить - to give as a gift
  • сказать - to say, tell (someone)
  • купить - to buy (for someone)
  • звонить - to call (on the phone) - always takes the dative
  • рекомендовать - to recommend

Singular endings

Masculine and neuter take -у / -ю; feminine takes -е / -и (the same ending as the prepositional).

Examples

  • Я дал собаке воду - I gave the dog water (собаке = dative, воду = accusative direct object).
  • Я подарил жене цветы - I gave my wife flowers.
  • Михаил сказал другу привет - Mikhail said hi to his friend.
  • Марина купила сыну книгу - Marina bought her son a book (note сыну dative and книгу accusative happen to rhyme, but they are different cases).
  • Андрей звонит маме каждый день - Andrei calls his mum every day.

Beyond the indirect object

From the overview, the dative also handles:

  • Feelings and states - мне холодно (I am cold), мне скучно (I am bored).
  • Age - мне двадцать лет (I am twenty).
  • Likes and dislikes - with нравиться.
  • Need - with надо / нужно.
  • The preposition к (toward).

Lessons worth keeping

  • Dative = the recipient / indirect object (to whom, for whom). Give, tell, buy-for, call, recommend all point a dative at a person.
  • Endings: masculine/neuter -у/-ю, feminine -е/-и (identical to the prepositional).
  • звонить (to call) always takes the dative, even though it feels like a direct action in English.
  • Dative also carries feelings (мне холодно), age (мне 20 лет), likes (нравиться), and need (надо).
